The Sherman Riot of 1930 was one of the major outbreaks of racial violence in the United States and brought international noteriety to Texas race relations. The crisis began with an accusation of rape of a white woman by an African American male the accused, a farmhand named George Hughes, was arrested and scheduled for trial within a week of the incident. Meanwhile, a mob gathered each night inside the jail.
